Snow Cover Effects on Glacier Ice Surface Temperature

چکیده
Snowpack evolution and glacier ice surface temperatures were studied on the Indren glacier (Northwestern Alps, Italy) under different meteorological conditions: in winter 2002–2003, rich in snow from the beginning of the season, and in winter 2005– 2006, poor in snow until February. Periodical snow profiles were made to measure the physical properties of snow, while data loggers measured the snow/ice interface temperature. Furthermore, in winter 2002–2003, the influence on the snowpack evolution of an artificial increase in the snow density was evaluated. During the season rich in snow there was a prevalence of rounded crystals originated by melt-freeze metamorphism, while in the season poor in snow depth hoar and faceted crystals prevailed, due to the higher temperature gradient. From these two winter seasons, it appeared that a deep snow cover of at least 100 cm was able to maintain the snow/ice temperature at around 25uC until the snow cover reached isothermal conditions, whereas, during the winter of 2005–2006, the shallow depth of snow did not allow basal temperature to reach an equilibrium value and the snow/ice interface temperature oscillated between 22 and 28uC. The altered snow density had no effect on the snow/ice interface temperature, whereas it caused a delay in the time of reaching isothermal conditions, thus allowing snow cover on the glacier to persist longer.

Measuring Snow and Glacier Ice Properties from Satellite
Satellite remote sensing is a convenient tool for studying snow and glacier ice, allowing us to conduct research over large and otherwise inaccessible areas. This paper reviews various methods for measuring snow and glacier ice properties with satellite remote sensing. These methods have been improving with the use of new satellite sensors, like the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) during the las...
متن کاملPrecision snow cover and glacier mapping for runoff modelling in a high alpine basin
The runoff regime of high alpine basins will be affected in response to global warming not only by the seasonal snow cover but also by glaciers. Runoff peaks due to snowmelt will partially be shifted from the summer to the winter. The glacier melt will supply a higher amount of meltwater until glaciers finally disappear, if the temperature keeps rising. In order to evaluate quantitatively this ...
متن کاملAn Automated Approach for Mapping Persistent Ice and Snow Cover over High Latitude Regions
We developed an automated approach for mapping persistent ice and snow cover (glaciers and perennial snowfields) from Landsat TM and ETM+ data across a variety of topography, glacier types, and climatic conditions at high latitudes (above ~65 ̋N). Our approach exploits all available Landsat scenes acquired during the late summer (1 August–15 September) over a multi-year period and employs an aut...
متن کاملDistributed mapping of snow and glaciers for improved runo modelling
Runo in glacierized alpine basins results from both seasonal snow cover and glacier melt. In this paper we present a case study for an improved runo modelling of the basin Massa-Blatten, 196 km, 1447±4191 m a.s.l. Using high resolution satellite sensors, it is possible to separately map snow cover and glacier areas. From the satellite data we derive depletion curves of snow covered areas in s...
متن کاملDistributed Mapping of Snow and Glaciers for Improved Runoff Modelling
Runoff in glacierized alpine basins results from the seasonal snow cover and from the glacier melt. Due to high resolution satellite sensors, it is possible to map snow cover and glacier areas in the basin of Massa-Blatten, 196 km2, 1447 4191 m a.s.l. Depletion curves of snow covered areas were derived in six elevation zones. In addition, the date was determined when the glacierice became expos...
